Anderson’s epistemology was a realist theory of the direct perception of the object of knowledge. As such, it stood in direct contradiction of any theory that held that ‘ideas’ or ‘sensa’ somehow mediated between minds and the objects which they knew or experienced. Anderson called such a theory ‘Idealist’ and argued that it was an unintelligible or ‘unspeakable’ position.
