Love and Friendship

This course examines one of the most common emotions and yet one of the most difficult to understand: love. We approach this subject through the Greek notion of philia or friendship as found in Aristotle and of the relationship of friendship to intimacy. We then move on to a consideration of romantic love and the various psychological theories that seek to explain it. Finally we look at the notion of mature love as found in the work of the psychiatrist, Erich Fromm.
